Back in 1972, with the city facing serious financial problems, the closure of several firehouses throughout the city was proposed.  One of the fireshouses slated for closure was Engine 210 on Carlton Avenue, near Myrtle Avenue.

In response, residents gathered in front of the station to demand the city not cut this vital service. Luckily, Engine 210 can still be found on Carlton Avenue – more than 145 years old after it was first organized in Fort Greene!   If this photo were taken today, you would find the restaurants Lulu & Po and Chung Chun Kitchen located in the corner building (seen on the right side of the photo).
