Community Forum: Addressing Downsizing with NYCHA Residents

Fri, May 15th, 2015

Downsizing ForumThe Fort Greene & Clinton Hill Senior Advisory Council has partnered with Councilwomen Laurie Cumbo to help promote her event that will address the issue of “Downsizing” for New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) residents. Residents who’s family size has decreased but remain living in apartments that reflect that original number are being asked to “downsize” into an apartment that reflects the current number of people who live in NYCHA apartments. Senior residents have expressed that this causes great anxiety and stress for them. According to an April 2014 NY Daily News article “more than 6,500 seniors living in public housing could be evicted if they do not agree to the new terms. The Housing Authority says it has a total of 11,400 households in what it calls “extremely underoccupied” apartments.”

Councilwomen Cumbo has organized 3 forums at local NYCHA developments to address concerns and questions. Representatives from NYCHA will be present to discuss their downsizing policy and process and residents will have the opportunity to ask questions.

All are invited and encouraged to attend the last of the three forums:
