MulchFest 2009 at Fort Greene Park, 1/10 and 1/11

MulchFest 2009 is taking place on Saturday and Sunday, January 10th and 11th, from 10am to 2pm. Chip in! Mulch your tree! Help NYC grow.

MulchFest provides New Yorkers an opportunity to bring their Christmas trees to designated sites where they are ground into wood chips. The chips can then be placed in tree pits and gardens. Parks & Recreation encourages New Yorkers to help the environment and their community by participating in this event. MulchFest takes place on January 10th & 11th, 2008 from 10:00am to 2:00pm. Participants are encouraged to bring bags to take advantage of the free mulch provided.

All lights, ornaments and stands must be taken off. Mulch will not be available at sites marked as "Drop-off Only".

And the Winners Are...

The competition was fierce and the vote count was tight, but the winners of Myrtle's first Holiday Windows Contest have been chosen by you, the public, via text message voting. Given how close the contest was, and given how many enthusiastic and talented artists participated, we added second and third place monetary prizes, while honorable mentions went to those Storefront Windows that had particularly strong support via emails, calls, and comments to our staff.

The artist(s) winning first place receives gift certificates valued at $250 to participating Myrtle Avenue businesses, while the second and third place winners receive gift certificates valued at $100 and $50 respectively.

1st Place: Benjie Sirota and Julia Wadsworth for their work at Zaytoons
2nd Place: Leola Bermanzohn for her work at (burzh-wa)
3rd Place: Suzanna Shapiro for her work at Gnarly Vines

And the Honorable Mentions go to:

The “Bright Idea” Award, for most innovative use of holiday lights, goes to artist Kelly Horrigan and Sara Weissler for their work at Karen’s Body Beautiful.

The “Snowblower” Award, for most creative interpretation of the theme of the business (in this case, using hair as snow), goes to artist Alecs Gryczon for her work at Joseph Tyler Salon.

The “Santa's Workshop“ Award, for most innovative use of outside materials to create multi-dimensional scenes, goes to Cecilia Rebecca Ziko, Matt Brennan and Melissa Rioux for their work at The Bakery (pictured above) and Kapella’s.

The “Yes We Can” Award, for creatively incorporating current events into an inspirational holiday theme, goes to Kathleen Hayek for her work at Fort Greene SNAP.

Many thanks to all of the merchants, artists, and voters who participated in this year's Holiday Windows Contest. We hope everyone enjoyed the window art as much as we did, and got in the holiday shopping mood while walking down Myrtle Avenue.

Banneker High School/ New York Cares Coat Drive...thru Dec. 18th

If you have new or gently used coats to spare (perhaps that the kids may have outgrown or that you generally just do not have use or room for anymore), please consider donating them to Banneker Brothers United during their New York Cares Coat Drive, thru Friday, December 18th.

Banneker Brothers United is a group of extremely civic-minded high school students from Benjamin Banneker Academy for Community Development located at 77 Clinton Avenue, near Park Avenue.

Coats can be dropped off at the school thru 5pm any weekday through the end of the drive. Please also free to call the school for further information: (718) 797-3702.

During Banneker's coat drive launch, which was held in front of Connecticut Muffin on Saturday, December 6th, during the Myrtle holiday windows design kick-off, the students collected more than 83 coats. They are extremely thankful to our Fort Greene/Clinton Hill community for showing full-support.

Each December, New York Cares collects nearly 80,000 gently used winter coats and distributes them to thousands of men, women, and children--at homeless shelters, nursing homes, and other organizations--who would otherwise go without.
