Red Apple Supermarket to open on Monday, 10/31, 7am!

We just got word that Red Apple Supermarket at Myrtle and Ashland will be opening bright and early Monday morning at 7am. Opening day will include a ribbon cutting at 9:30am, so come on out and enjoy the festivities!

The new store hours will be M-Sa from 7a-10p and Sundays from 7a-9p.

MARP has been working closely with FUREE, District Leader Lincoln Restler, and Council Member Tish James, over the last 9 months or so to help ensure that the new Red Apple Supermarket will be responsive to the needs of the local community in terms of affordability, product mix, accessibility, and employment opportunities. Part of this effort included a very successful job fair held on September 25th at the Ingersoll Community Center, where 55 local residents were hired, including one of MARP's former summer YEMP students. Be sure to come by on Monday or in the coming days and weeks to see what we hope will be very positive results from this collaborative effort.

Update: Just In!
RAVIOLIFICIO LO SCOIATTOLO, Italy’s third largest fresh pasta manufacturer will make its Brooklyn debut on Monday, October 31st @ the Red Apple Supermarket 218 Myrtle Avenue in the Andrea apartment building from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Lo Scoiattolo has never been sold in the United States before and this is the first time for a store in Brooklyn. Free tastings will be made available.

Joe Gonzalez's Gravatar Now that the supermarket is open I want MARP to reveal to the community just how many local residents got jobs in that supermarket. The jobs for locals was the core issue discussed during the past several years. It's time for MARP to perform a public service and reveal the numbers of locals who are employed therein.

Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership's Gravatar Joe,
You're right, jobs were a key part of the community's discussion with Red Apple over the last several months. As has been fairly well reported on our site and the local press, 55 local residents were hired at a Red Apple Supermarket job fair organized by FUREE, District Leader Lincoln Restler, Council Member Tish James, and MARP in late September. The job fair was marketed heavily via flyers door to door throughout the NYCHA developments, and we're very happy that there were so many successful job applicants. While additional hires were made after the job fair, we are told that about 97% of the job openings at the supermarket were filled with local residents.
