Move About Myrtle grooves into week 2...

Did you Move About Myrtle with us this weekend? Send your photos to info@myrtleavenue.org, and we'll add them to our flickr set. This Sunday’s schedule proves to have something for everyone – more Soul Summit, a Food Fest, recycling 101, and even a world-renowned dog artist! We know you’re excited to hear more, so here it goes…

Clermont to Vanderbilt
Early in the day, enjoy the smooth sounds of Duncan’s Fish Market’s Steel Pan band from noon-2pm, then dance the afternoon away with Soul Summit, who’s back for one more Fort Greene dance party this year, spinning from 3-6pm on Myrtle near Clermont. Sidewalk sales return at Kiini Ibura, and Home and U!

Vanderbilt to Clinton
Brooklyn Food Coalition brings tasty, healthy food fun and education to Move About Myrtle! BFC’s “Good Food Fest” is jam-packed (no pun intended) with chef demos, tastings, contests and representatives from your local food groups! Here are the deets:
12:00-3:00
• Kick-off with NYC radical marching band Rude Mechanical Orchestra!
• NYC Beekeeping Association will share the buzz about Urban Beekeeping & Wendy Godek will show us how to can jam.
• Enjoy FREE food samples from local purveyors such as: LugNuts, BK Salsa Co, BK Bouillon, and more!
• Visit tables from these organizations to learn more and find out how you can get involved in the local food movement: GrowNYC Greenmarkets, Greene Hill Food Co-op, Families United for Racial and Economic Equity (FUREE), Fort Greene Association (FGA), Fort Greene Peace, Myrtle Avenue Revitalization Project Myrtle Eats Fresh program and the Brooklyn Food Coalition.
12:30 – 2:30 Cooking demos with local chefs

• 1:00 with Marina Berger, preparing Traditional Eastern European Pickles & Russian Potato Salad using Lactofermentation
• 1:30 with Sherry Grimes, preparing Seared Salmon with local Bok Choy, Tomatoes, Beans, Cucumbers and Basil
• 2:00 with Growing Chefs, demonstrating Sprouting & recipes that incorporate Sprouts
1:00-3:00 Myrtle Eats Fresh Community Chef Yvonne Bodrick will prepare a meal from start to finish with tastings and take away recipes for all to enjoy!
2:30 – 3:00 Best Dish Contest
Bring a dish and enter to win! Celebrity judges include: Christopher Elam, National Program Director of Meatless Monday, food writer Kerry Trueman, City Council Member Letitia James and Suzanne Barr, Owner of Sweet Potato Bakery.
3:00-6:00 Family Cook Productions Teen Battle Chefs, fresh off their 4Food Veggiescoop contest win, will prepare a Spicy Corn Salad for all to sample! The teen chefs are students at NYC HealthCorps schools.
4:00-6:00 Canning enthusiast Kate Payne will share her secrets to making pickles and demonstrate how common kitchen appliances can be used by a novice canner.

Clinton to Waverly
Reduce, reuse and recycle here! GrowNYC will be on hand with an interactive game that teaches Myrtle-Movers of all ages the rules you need to know about how to recycle in NYC, and Green in BKLYN is collaborating with the Mac Support Store for an E-Waste drive from noon – 6pm! No better time than the present to clear out all of those old electronics in your closet! Also at Green in BKLYN – meet Tillamook Cheddar, renowned dog artist (yes, he’s a dog!), and check out his work (from noon-2pm), compost with Vokashi from 2-4pm, and meet author Kate Hanley (The Anywhere, Anytime Chill Guide) and check out ‘lollipop meditation’ from 4-6pm. For kids (and the inner child in all of us), this block will be devoted to good old-fashioned fun! Hula hoops, street games and sidewalk chalk will be on hand for open use throughout the day, with plenty of ‘blank street canvas’ for all, and free arts and crafts activities! Enjoy free mini-smoothies from Karrot all day, and check out the spa promotions at Karen’s Body Beautiful.

Waverly to Washington
Let loose your inner Frida Kahlo! Clinton Hill Hardware has donated paints and brushes for an ‘open painting area’ in front of their store. There will be plenty of cardboard 'canvas' to go around, so bring your creative energy! Also plenty of space to sit and watch the action here while you enjoy a drink and a bite, with sidewalk cafes at Maggie Brown’s, Thai 101, Anima and Five Spot! Brunch anyone?

Washington to Hall
Brought to you by local yoga and dance studio Move with Grace, this block will feature free yoga, dance, and themed dance parties on each of the four Sundays (check back for this Sunday’s schedule). Little girls can get ready for school with a ‘kiddie manicure’ at Polish Bar, and fashionistas can pick up some new pieces at Barking Brown. Lots of sidewalk cafes on this block as well, so if dancing and shopping aren’t for you, then just relax with a cool drink outside Zaytoons (with a hookah, if you’d like), Kum Kau and Liberty Pizza.

Here’s a teaser about what’s in store for upcoming weeks:
“The Case of the Curious Pedestrian” brings playful public art projects and performances to the avenue on 9/19
BAMcafe’ brings DJ Idlemind, Le Grand Baton, and Fifth Nation on 9/19 and 9/26
Don't miss the FDNY Smoke House on 9/19
Sidewalk chalking contest with prizes 9/26
Our first ever bike/scooter/big wheel parade from Hall to Clermont kicks of 9/26, with lots of bike-themed programs throughout the day!

Do you have a free activity or game that you’d like to share with your fellow Myrtle visitors? Send us an email at Meredith@myrtleavenue.org!
