Small Businesses and You

Small businesses play a huge role in the NYC economy. According to the NYC Department of Small Business Services, half of the city's private sector workforce is employed by small businesses, providing the city with $4.5 billion in tax revenue. But the competition that these small businesses face is fierce because large national chains bring deep pockets for advertising, marketing, and so on. In addition, when compared to their national rivals small businesses, on average, have very little space to display their products and to store inventory.

Fortunately you're an active participant in determining which businesses live or die in the neighborhood. Your shopping habits greatly impact the fate of small businesses. So the next time you think, "I need to get some medicine," give the local store a chance. To see a directory of Myrtle Avenue businesses, click here.
