What's Going On? Tree Pit Expansion
By now you've probably noticed the sawcut lines surrounding Myrtle Avenue's tree pits. We're making streetscape improvements. With funds mostly from the New York Main Street (NYMS) grant program we are expanding all the tree pits in our target area (Flatbush to Classon) so they measure 8 feet by 5 feet. Why? It can be difficult for a street tree, what with all the pollution, lack of space, and abuse from cars, bikes, and people. This tree pit expansion project will help the trees to gain access to water, air, and nutrients to help them grow more healthfully.
We're removing over 1600 square feet of concrete and adding more than 1200 square feet of Belgian blocks in the pits to improve a total of 105 tree pits. Due to budget constraints, only the tree pits on Myrtle will get the Belgian blocks. Work should be complete by mid-February.

Just a bummer that they didn't bother to do this the first time around when they installed the tree pits a year ago.
