New Businesses Wanted: Bakery (and others)!

Thinking about opening a new business? For quite a while now we've been trying to attract businesses to fill the demand for FG/CH's particular shopping needs: a butcher, bakery, bookstore, gourmet grocer, organic food store, florist, cheese shop, and ice cream shop.

If you're interested in opening a new business on Myrtle Avenue in FG/CH, especially one of those mentioned above, we can help! We've secured city and state funds to provide matching grants to help entrepreneurs build out a retail space (with a $10,000 match) or to make storefront/signage improvements (with a $1,000 match).

We'd like to support projects that 1) preserve historic details, where appropriate, 2) make transparent storefronts with tall windows (like in this photo), and 3) we want to promote signage that is simple and attractive.

If you're planning to open a business within 6 months and have financing planned out, contact us. We especially encourage you to apply if you're an independently-owned business and have a business plan in place.

NYC Tax Payer's Gravatar Why are my tax dollars going to fund only certain businesses? What makes an independant coffee store better than Starbucks? This is the USA, let capitalistic free enterprise decided who stays and who guess. Simple economic theory 101. Please do not get the government involved in who can open a store and who not.

Brooklyn Tax Payer's Gravatar Where does it say they would only fund an independent coffee shop over a Starbucks? The businesses they list are the types of businesses that us Fort Greene residents have been asking for for years. But that being said, certainly more of our tax dollars are supporting large national chains through subsidies and economic incentives than supporting mom and pop businesses.

Tom Hughes's Gravatar Thank you so much, MARP. Although I am not an entrepreneur, from a resident's perspective it is great to see that you all are supporting the neighborhood's needs in this way. Great job!

Gabe's Gravatar As a NYC tax payer I am glad that public money is going towards the economic development of the Myrtle Ave area.

Huge corporations get plenty of tax breaks and public money. There's no reason our part of Myrtle Avenue shouldn't join in.

Skeptical's Gravatar It's easy to say, "Huge corporations get plenty of tax breaks and public money," but can you actually point to any specific examples? What money has NYC's government ever given to Starbucks?

Gabe's Gravatar My comment about tax breaks was directed more on the federal level. The original comment was "Why are my tax dollars going to fund only certain businesses?". I was simply confused how/why that person saw tax breaks only going to independent businesses.
